Vietnam Veterans’ Day is commemorated on 18 August every year. The day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966. ... Over time, all Vietnam veterans adopted the day as one to commemorate those who served and died in Vietnam.
Last week Cohuna Leitchville RSL Sub Branch President Geoff Dale was one of three who attended the small commemoration service at Memorial Park in Cohuna on the day.
“There was only myself, Trevor Powis who took the photo and Vietnam War Veteran Kevin Harker attending.
“We didn’t have a whole group of us there due to lockdown. We just kept it small and low key. We laid a wreath as part of the commemoration.”
RSL Victoria and the Cohuna RSL and local community Facebook page groups acknowledged the occasion and shared the photo of Kevin which reached over 700 people and 37 shares on the RSL Victoria Facebook page.
In acknowledging Kevin’s service – many thanked him for his contribution along with others that served during this time.
Beverly Brown – “Forever grateful to the servicemen who served our country. Thank you Kevin for your contribution and distinguished service. Proud to have you as a member of our sub-branch and community.”
Another wrote: “Thank you for your long distinguished service Kevin. “Duty First”.
In acknowledgement of Kevin’s service another comment made.
“He’s a proud man, Thank you Kevin. I remember waiting to see if my brother would have his number picked out. A dreadful time. We will always remember you all.”
