On this day – August 1, 1961 (63 years ago), the Canberra Times (page 3) reported that: Cohuna’s Dr Peter Graham (34yrs) and his wife Anne (29yrs) were found semi-conscious, frostbitten and near-starving after five days lost in blizzard conditions in the Snowy Mountains. Holidaying at Thredbo Lodge Hotel, they had become lost in a blizzard, spending the first night in a hole under a rock in below freezing temperatures. The next day, Dr Graham found a hut but could not find his way back to Anne, so she spent a second night under the rock. Both spent three nights in the 6ft by 4ft gauging station hut belonging to the Snowy Mountains Authority, too weak to leave. The search was one of the biggest in the Snowy Mountains area for some years.
