In a community as sparsely populated as the Murray Electorate, 11,000 signatures were hard fought for by volunteers, businesses, kids and farmers.
These signatures called for a Royal Commission into the Murray Darling Basin Plan and for a public water register; something that was legislated in 2004, in the National Water Initiative.
11,000 signatures may not sound like much to you. What if I told you some of these towns have less than 500 people?
The signatures gathered up painstakingly from community events like the annual agricultural show. One such show see 100 people at best. This small number doesn’t reflect the quality or calibre of the show but rather, the reality of when you don’t have irrigation.
If we measured these votes on love for our community, that 11,000 would be a cake walk. Unfortunately it wasn’t love, it was numbers from tiny communities. OUR communities.
Some of these communities have lost 70% employment and geographical areas in economic depression, not to mention our environmental assets being irreversibly damaged!
Why is this important? It’s important because the game keeper and poacher appear one and the same.
Mrs Dalton took our 11,000 votes, marched in parliament and advocated for us, on our behalf.
She went through shit storm after shit storm of personal abuse, attacks in parliament and on Twitter, being called into question her own ownership of water, though she had already declared it before entering parliament.
Now Melinda Pavey, of the NSW Nationals, says politicians owning water is a ‘conspiracy theory’ and has made a few adjustments of her own (see below).
Isn’t there enough smoke?
Water trading, environmental damage, foreign ownership, the expansion of unregulated flood plain harvesting, just to name a few, and also separation of land and water!
Have a look for yourself and tell me if that’s what our community lobbied for and what you are comfortable with, the not knowing if someone owns water during the biggest water reform since federation!
Believing this is a conspiracy theory may well be why Nigeria chooses to conduct telemarketing here
