Target Country Closes Doors on Kerang
1 min read

In a rebranding and downsizing move, Wesfarmers chose to retire the use of its iconic Target chain after falling profitability. More than 160 stores were marked for closure or to be rebranded as a Kmart or K hub store. While Target in Swan Hill was rebranded to K hub, Kerang’s Target Country closed its doors for the final time on March 18, and all signage and fittings have been removed.

Previous Shire Mayor, Lorraine Learmonth, stated, “The closure of the Target Country Kerang branch will end a 142-year association with the retail sector in the township, with the outlet located in the former Hawthorne’s Department Store site, which, in its heyday was the largest retail outlet in northern Victoria,” and that, “Council was extremely disappointed by Wesfarmers’ decision, and wrote to the company expressing our position and calling on them to reverse their decision.”

However, Gannawarra Shire Council received a response from Kmart Group General Manager of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, Tracie Walker, confirming that the company is, “unable to revisit the decision to close or explore other options for the Kerang store.”

The future of the prominent business space is uncertain. Gannawarra Shire Council stated in a press release last year that they would, “continue to work with the Kerang Traders group and other retailers” interested in the space.
