Koondrook is a finalist in the Top Tiny Tourism Town category.

The TAC Victorian Top Tourism Town Awards finalists have been announced with Koondrook being recognised as a nature-based tourism destination. The awards showcase the value of tourism to the towns and communities across Victoria and celebrate the diversity and outstanding regional destinations of the state.

Koondrook Development Committee President Tom Chick was thrilled with the announcement.

“We've got a great little town and this is a recognition of a lot of work done over a lot of years to make Koondrook really present well to visitors.

“When you really look at Koondrook, we do have a lot to offer, we’re a great destination.”

Included in the finalist listing is a two-day, one-night self-drive itinerary for tourists to explore.

Koondrook was first known to European settlers as ‘The Junction’, a paddle steamer stop, before being officially named ‘Koondrook’ in 1878. The town sits idyllically positioned in the junction of the Murray and Gunbower Creek, with the 26,400 hectare floodplain of Gunbower Island just a stone’s throw away.

The Awards are presented in three categories: Top Tourism Town – those with a population of over 5,000 people, Top Small Tourism Town – those with a population between 1,500 and 5,000 people and Top Tiny Tourism Town – those with a population below 1,500 people.

The Top Tourism Town Awards aims to recognise and reward towns that demonstrate a strong commitment to tourism and to increasing visitation to the destination, that offer an excellent visitor experience, and exhibit collaboration with tourism operators, local businesses and the community to make their town the best destination it can be.

The winners will be voted in, with the public voting opening shortly.
