What would you like to see happen on New Year’s Eve? The Cohuna and District Progress Association is seeking input into the New Year’s Eve event for this year.
Traditionally, the event allows people to relax in the park listening to live music and to see the new year in with a fireworks display. COVID-19 had forced the committee to abandon the event, but with eased restrictions, the carnival was pulled together at short notice. While there were carnival rides to entertain, there was no live music or fireworks.
Progress Association secretary, Sonia Wright, said, “Fireworks cost approximately $6,000 and we need a new location as Murray Sound is no longer an option. A band costs approximately $5,000. Carnival side shows are no cost to Progress, but the user pays.
“We want to provide a great experience for our locals and visitors. We can afford to put money in for this year from our events account but going forward this will be a problem as we just don’t have the number of volunteers to fundraise all year. It takes a lot of effort from only a few. On the night, volunteers are virtually non-existent. We can afford to pay community groups to clean up, but often they are not available.
“We need your ideas to provide a safe family event, that we can run into the future.”
The public are welcome to attend the next Progress Association meeting at the Council Meeting Room at 7pm on Monday night, April 19.
