Fletchers Honoured at Memorial Shoot

The Cohuna Clay Target Club will be honouring two locals who passed away in recent years when it holds the inaugural Gordon and Wendy Fletcher Memorial Shoot. The shoot, which is expected to attract a large contingent, will be held on Saturday, March 13.

Gordon had been shooting for much of his life, taking up the sport at around 18 years of age before having a break from it when life got busy. It was when his sons, Rohan and Jarrod, took up the sport around 26 years ago that he and Wendy became involved in the Cohuna Clay Target Club.

Jumping in and giving it their all, it was not long before they took on positions of responsibility on the committee, Gordon serving two years as president, and Wendy serving three as secretary, including a year where they held both positions concurrently. Their commitment did not stop there, they made sure the club had sponsorship, helped at shoots and kept the club up to scratch, right up until their deaths; Wendy in 2019 and Gordon in 2020.

Ray Peatling was a close family friend and fellow shooting enthusiast. He says the Fletchers did an enormous amount of work for the club, contributing to its success. “They were very heavily involved. Gordon always spoke his mind at meetings. Gordon and Wendy put heaps of work into that gun club, the amount of work they did is unreal,” he said.

Travelling to shooting meets across Victoria and interstate the Fletchers developed relationships with many people. “He was very well liked everywhere you went,” said Ray of Gordon, “he had friends everywhere.” It is for that reason that Ray believes the memorial shoot will be well attended.

Outside of the shooting arena, Wendy and Gordon were much loved members of the Cohuna community in general.

Competitors will share in $5,500 in prizes and cash, with the overall winner having the honour of being the first name on the Gordon and Wendy Fletcher Memorial Shoot shield.
