Barham U16’S Back-to-Back Premiers

Cohuna was host to the U16’s Northern District Cricket grand final over the weekend. With perfect weather spoiling both players and spectators, it was set up for a great weekend of cricket.

Saturday started with Barham Koondrook winning the toss and sending Cohuna Nondies into bat first. Xavier Wishart and Angus Donat opened the batting, getting their side off to a solid start with an opening partnership of 29 runs. Jack Lake broke the opening partnership with a catch to Lachie Laursen, with Wishart going for 11 runs.

Cohuna Nondies continued to build the next partnership with Mitch Treacy at the crease. Donat and Treacy batted well together bringing Cohuna’s score to 77, before Zeb Hein got the breakthrough, bowling Donat for 19 runs.

One over later, Hein was on a hat trick with Coby Wright getting caught by Mac Schoular. Aiden Konopka and Treacy put on another 15 runs before Konopka was caught by Schoular, bowled Xavier Lenard. Cohuna Nondies now 4/92. Treacy continued to put runs on the board but couldn’t find anyone to stay at the other end. Eventually Mason Laursen got the wicket Barham Koondrook was looking for, with Treacy hitting one over mid-wicket and straight down Jack Lake’s throat. A superb knock by Mitch Treacy for 36 runs, Cohuna Nondies now 7/104 with six overs remaining. Cohuna Nondies managed to put on a further nine runs, before being all out for 113.

With Cohuna Nondies having the runs on the board, Sunday morning was set to be a tough chase of 114 for Barham Koondrook. Opening the batting, Will Lake and Kynan Laursen set up the innings with a nice partnership of 35 runs before Mitch Treacy got Lausen (7) caught and bowled. Mac Schoular and Lake continued to build the tally, until Jude Palmer broke through with Schoular (11) hitting a catch to Liam Edge. Barham Koondrook was now 2/59. Lachie Laursen met Lake at the crease, still needing a further 55 runs. The pair's batting was first class, and they didn’t look like going out, putting on a partnership of 58. With only one run to get, Laursen smashed a four to the boundary, passing Cohuna Nondies’ total only two wickets down and with 13.3 overs remaining. Lausen ended up 23 not out.

Will Lake was named man of the match, with top score of 37 not out, also bowling a tidy five overs for eight runs and one catch.

Congratulations to Barham Koondrook for a great win and becoming the U16’s Northern District Cricket Premiers for the second year in a row!
