Just over one week in, and our twin towns have embraced the border control permit system.
Police Officers managing the system have travelled from Sydney in the beginning of this week, establishing the arrival of the second deployment.
Chief Inspector Chris Badalati - Forward Commander for Far West, said that the 10-hour days checking people in has been made all the more worthwhile not only for our community’s safety, but by the overwhelming hospitality of our generous locals.
“People have been so kind to us, arriving with homemade cakes and biscuits, and dropping off snacks for the staff. We have been so well looked after and its very much appreciated.”
Chief Inspector Badalati said that police have not had to turn anyone away as yet, with motorists having permits ready to present as they enter the NSW side of the border. With five officers on site at any one time, the Inspector hopes to pass motorists through as promptly as possible with little to no delays.
“I only arrived here in Barham this afternoon but by all accounts, everyone has been wonderful,” she said, “The kind staff at the Barham Bridge Motel have been looking after everyone and we look forward to the rest of our time here.”
In the coming weeks, locals can expect to see the arrival of the Australian Defence Force who will be assisting with the management of the border control system.
