I was able to observe and photograph this Eastern brown snake and see its flicking forked tongue. It is a natural question to ask, “Why does a snake flick its tongue?” Scientists inform us that it’s flicking tongue enables the snake to “taste” the air and so discern both potential prey and danger. Observing the snake’s flicking forked tongue reminded me of the old idiom “speaking with a forked tongue” – meaning telling lies or being deceptive
