An active and safe return to school

Families and children are encouraged to walk, cycle or scoot to school to develop healthy habits and road safety skills now that on-site learning has resumed at schools and pre-schools across the Gannawarra.

Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said that after weeks of remote learning due to the Coronavirus pandemic it is a welcome sight to see children and their families back on local streets and footpaths.

“It is fabulous to see children back out in the community as they actively and safely make their way to and from school,” Mayor Learmonth said.

“While families are encouraged to continue to maintain physical distance of 1.5 metres between household groups, walking to school is a great way to enjoy some fresh air and meet other people.”

Motorists are reminded to keep an eye out for extra traffic around schools and to be mindful of children as they actively travel to and from school.

“Speed limits around the Gannawarra’s schools are 40 kilometres per hour, with school crossings in operation at a number of locations,” Mayor Learmonth said.

“Please observe road rules around schools and pre-schools and remember that pedestrians have right of way at all manned and unmanned school crossings.”
